T-Mobile's Advice Concerning Froyo 2.2

I received some surprising information from T-Mobile this morning. I phoned to see if I could glean any information about their status in the Wildfire Froyo 2.2 update situation. I asked if they could give any idea as to when they would be rolling out this update. Their answer was pretty much the same as HTC themselves, they couldn't give any date whatsoever at this stage. What they did say is that Froyo 2.2 has already been released on a certain amount of Wildfire handsets and that T-Mobile themselves had started testing.

They explained that Froyo 2.2 is being released in batches for Wildfire. They said that it was all to do with each individual phones IMEI number, some of which had problems when tested with Froyo 2.2.

I was surprised to learn that a company who had requested multiple Wildfire handsets had also requested an early update to Froyo 2.2 as they needed this operating system (os) for their programmes. Apparently a large portion of these Wildfires' were successfully updated.

So as it stands, it is quite possible to obtain the Froyo 2.2 update early if you are on a T-Mobile contract. I presume this may be the same for other carriers but as yet have not verified this. The way to check for an update seems simple too:

  • Go to menu
  • Settings
  • Date & time
  • Untick 'Automatic'
  • Set date; set date for 2 months in advance ie, Jan 26, 2011
  • Press back to go to main menu list
  • Select 'About phone'
  • System software updates
  • Scheduled check

So that is it, apparently by simply setting your phones date ahead of time by around 2 months and checking for updates you may be one of the lucky ones that can get your hands on Froyo 2.2 right now. Unfortunately, when checking my phone (I am currently now on T-Mobile contract) there were no updates available. T-Mobile's prediction was that we could be looking at 2 months time before we officially see the roll out of Froyo 2.2 on Wildfire. Let me know if any of you are successful with the sneaky way of updating!
