Toshiba Excite 13 AT335, Worlds Largest Tablet - UK Release Date

Just when you thought that Android tablets couldn't possibly get any larger, having reached an incredible 10 inches already, Toshiba are set to break the record with the worlds largest Android tablet, which measures a mind boggling 13 inches. For those of you that like a bigger piece of Android cake, this Toshiba slab will surely sate your appetite.

Toshiba Excite 13 AT335 is arguably not the most portable, hand friendly size, but as Android tablets gain momentum in the smart wars popularity contest, it seems there is room for a tablet of these proportions, especially as it has a built-in stand to alleviate repetitive strain injuries and enable a Netflix movie viewing extravaganza, Android style. You can get a better idea of the sheer size of Toshiba Excite 13 by taking a look at the image below.

As Jared Leavitt, spokesman for Toshiba told Wired:

'The Excite 13 is what we see as a home tablet. The larger size makes it an ideal kitchen tablet. You can watch how-to videos while you’re cooking, or look up recipes. And then later, you can bring it into the living room to watch videos with the kids, or to look at family photos with friends.'

Whether you can stomach an Android tablet of such monstrous proportions is the question, or are you following the tablet trend of 'less is more'? For, as Android smartphones grow larger and lighter by the day, smaller Android tablets are in favour it seems. Even Google's own highly anticipated Android tablet will reach no further than 7 inches if rumours stand correct.

It all depends on personal preference as to which size suits you, for me the biggest I can get is always better, as long as other statistics continue to reduce, such as depth and weight. Lucky then that Toshiba Excite 13 will weigh in at a reasonable 998 grams (2.2 pounds) with a 10.16 mm waistline.

On the other side of the coin, it's argued that Android needs to find some uniformity and become less fragmented before it tries to wow the world with easy to do shock factors thrown in such as added inches. As almost any technology writer is keen to point out, time and time again, Apple iPad has not found it necessary to bring out multiple sizes to retain its unanimous success.

Whether Toshiba are innovative or just plain desperate to be noticed in Android's crowded arena remains to be seen. Jared Spool, CEO of User Interface Engineering said of the matter:

'What this comes down to is that it’s not the specific technology in a tablet that makes it exciting. It’s the user experience. This is the sort of typical maneuver of just adding another feature without improving the actual user experience. It’s just bigger, and it’s not clear to me that anyone is asking for bigger. You can only get the iPad in one size and nobody is saying, ‘Gee, it just feels a little too small to me.'

'These types of enhancements are knee-jerk reactions from companies who are trying to ‘out feature’ other companies,” he said. “But what this comes down to is that it’s not the specific technology in a tablet that makes it exciting. It’s the user experience. And there’s just a lot less to do on an Android tablet than an iPad. And what there is to do is much clumsier because the screen sizes and specs for Android tablets are all over the place. A 13-inch screen and a bunch of top specs do nothing to change that.'

The Toshiba Excite Android tablet range is also set to swell with another two Android tablets, a 7.7 inch version and a 10 inch version. And, peculiarly, the 7 incher is more expensive than the 10 inch model, as apparently smaller is more difficult to perfect.

Toshiba Excite Specs to Expect

Toshiba Excite 13 will come in two versions, either 32 GB or 64 GB, and will run on a super fast 1.5 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. It will ship with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) already installed, ensuring an up-to-date Android experience. Connectivity includes a microUSB port and a microHDMI port plus a full sized SD memory card slot. The 13 inch screen sports a resolution of 1600 x 900 pixels and has Corning Gorilla Glass for added protection against scratches.

UK Release Date and Price

Toshiba Excite 13 is set for a release date somewhere around June 2012. Expect a price tag of around $649.99 USD / £410 GBP for the 32 GB model and $749.99 USD / £472 GBP for the 64 GB model.
