Sony Xperia U was announced alongside its high end brother Sony Xperia P on 27th February, at Mobile World Congress (MWC). It joins Sony's NXT series of Android phones, their first without Ericsson, that consists of Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U. If you're not after all of Android technologies latest bells and whistles, but still want a decent smartphone that will more than satisfy your mobile needs, mid range Sony Xperia U will fit the bill nicely.

Just like the other two phones in NXT series, the emphasis rests squarely on media capabilities, superior screen viewing and style. Audio is enhanced to the max with xLOUD and Sony 3D surround sound technology, allowing you to enjoy your tunes with crisp, clear sound. With the addition of DLNA you can stream your fave tracks to wireless speakers and fill a whole room with quality noise.

xLOUD means EXTRA LOUD, and your private party will rock to an earsplitting degree with the aid of Smart Headset, featuring SmartKey, which launches favourite apps with one press.

Enjoy movies/browsing/photo viewing on the 3.5 inch LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen, and watch them on your HD TV via DLNA connectivity. Your experience will be ultra bright and sharply in focus thanks to Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine.

As with the other Android phones in the NXT series, customisation is key. You can change the caps to a colour of your choice and there's a translucent strip that, like a chameleon, changes colour to match its surroundings. In the case of Xperia U, music and photos/artwork are criteria that determine colour.

The rear facing camera is a little underwhelming, with just 5 MP of picture power, compared to its high end brothers (Xperia P) 8 MP. There is a simplistic VGA facetime camera on the front and the video is capable of capturing those special moments in 1080p HD.

A 1 GHz dual-core processor ensures a fluid, super fast browsing experience, but the meagre 512 MB RAM is quite shocking, and begs the question as to whether Xperia U will be able to upgrade past Ice Cream Sandwich, which incidentally, it won't arrive with out of the box, but rather will come equipped with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). NFC (Near Field communication) is absent from this particular model and the battery is not promising much fun at only 1320 mAh.

UK Release Date and Price

As with its sibling Sony Xperia P, Sony Xperia U should be available in the UK by 23rd April 2012. You can place a pre-order at Clove. The handset is unlocked/sim free, colour black with black/pink changeable caps included, and priced £238.80 (inclusive of vat).
